The day I wrangled a carnivorous plant…and lived to tell about it
The bogs of Northwoods Wisconsin are not for the faint of heart. Pitcher plants, elegant and carnivorous with upright stems and open pits or “pitchers” equipped with slick and deadly landing surfaces, thrive in the acidity of these isolated peatlands. Pitcher plants are king here, having evolved an excellent mechanism for luring food in a zone where it pays to be crafty. Each plant beckoned with a hypnotic red trap; I chose to give each wide berth.
There is no shortage of challenges or thrills here. I’ve hiked wetlands with 60 pounds of water monitoring equipment on my back and dodged freshwater leeches like a hunted animal.
My experiences were varied and challenging, but even a life of high adventure has its limits. Writing has always been a part of my professional life; eventually, I embraced it full-time.
From case studies, technical documentation, long-form articles to fact-sheets and books for the general public, I’ve written a variety of content for a broad base of clients.
